As elected representatives of our community, we are committed to making informed decisions that shape the future of our schools. Our responsibilities include:

  • Policy Development: Crafting and implementing policies that promote high educational standards and equity.
  • Budget Oversight: Ensuring that financial resources are allocated efficiently and effectively to support student learning and well-being.
  • Superintendent Supervision: Collaborating with and providing oversight for the Superintendent to ensure the district's strategic goals are met.
  • Curriculum and Instruction: Evaluating and approving curricula that meet the diverse needs of our students and prepare them for future success.
  • Facilities Management: Overseeing the maintenance and improvement of school facilities to provide a safe and conducive learning environment.
  • Community Engagement: Encouraging active participation from parents, students, teachers, and community members to foster a collaborative educational community.

School Committee Overview

The Winchester School Committee consists of five members elected for three-year terms, so arranged that as nearly an equal number of terms as possible expire each year. The Superintendent, Assistant Superintendents, and Financial Officer, sit at the meeting table but are not members of the committee and do not participate in votes. The minutes of the Committee are taken by the Administrative Assistant to the Superintendent.

 

Committee Duties

The Committee has the powers and duties given to it by the Constitution and General Laws of the Commonwealth and such additional powers as authorized by Home Rule Charter and other Town Meeting votes. The School Committee duties include:

  1. Establish goals and policies for the Winchester School System relating to education and ensuring that the policies are implemented by the Administration.

  2. Appoint the Superintendent of the Winchester Public Schools.

  3. Make all reasonable rules and regulations consistent with the law for the administration and management of the Winchester Public Schools.

  4. Review and approve the Winchester school system's annual budget.

  5. Negotiating all contracts with the Winchester Educational Association (WEA).

 

 

Upcoming Meetings

Regular meetings of the Winchester School Committee are generally scheduled for Thursdays at 6:30 PM twice a month from September through June at the Winchester High School - Room LG1 (B118), 80 Skillings Road, Winchester. The anticipated meeting schedule for the School Committee is subject to change.

Agendas are posted 48 hours in advance of the meeting on the Town of Winchester website.

Regular meetings are carried live on WinCAM and rebroadcasted on the local cable channel - Comcast 22/Verizon 36. Prior meetings are also streamed on WinCAM under Municipal Meetings.
